Mr. and Mrs. Walter L. Reno, Hermitage, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary July 6, 2008, with a party held at the Normandy Banquet Center of Hickory Veterans of Foreign Wars, Hermitage. Family and friends gathered for a luncheon buffet followed by dancing to the golden oldies and a nostalgic look back at the event of 1958.
The former M. Naomi Boston and Walter L. Reno were married July 3, 1958, in Columbiana, Ohio.
Mr. Reno retired from Sharon Steel Corp., Farrell, in 1983 after 36 years of served. An amateur boxer in his early life, he has remained an active follower of the sport, traveling with his wife to Canastota, N.Y., every year since 1991 for the Boxing Hall of Fame inductions. He enjoys photography, gardening and visiting with his buddies at local restaurants.
Mrs. Reno retired from Mercer Area School District as a music education teacher in 2002 after 32 years of service. She enjoys shopping, computer work, playing in the church bell choir and attending Bible study classes.
Together they enjoy traveling around the U.S. and caring for their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They are members of Hickory United Methodist Church, Hermitage.
Their children are: Lynda Rickman, Swepsonville, N.C.; Cindy R. Balkstra and husband, Marlon, Dahlonega, Ga.; David Reno, Mercer; and Debby Moore and husband, Samuel, Sayre, Pa.
They have six grandchildren: Rochelle Isley and husband, Chris, Mebane, N.C.; Shannon Rickman, Sandy Lake; Allison Overman and husband, Eddie, Snowcamp, N.C.; and Kevin, Justin and Dylan Reno, all Mercer.
Five great-grandchildren, Alicia and Ciara Rickman, Jake Isley and Brianna and Haylee Overman complete the family.
