Two witnesses put suspects in vicinity of bar the night of Basilone shooting

SHENANGO VALLEY — Two witnesses testified Friday that Joshua Stewart was near Basilone's bar on Roemer Boulevard in Farrell on Dec. 30, 2011 - the night bar-owner William Basilone was shot to death outside his bar.

Stewart is charged with first-, second- and third-degree murder and two counts each of robbery and conspiracy for the slaying.

Stewart's trial entered its second day Friday and prosecutors called two witnesses who fingered Stewart as one of the men in the vicinity that night.

Devine Campbell,  an alleged co-conspirator, was also identified. He faces the same charges and will be tried separately.

A third person, Tylor Kalenic, who was 15 at the time and was offered immunity for his testimony, was also there that night.

Kalenic told his story under oath Friday. He said he backed out of "hitting a lick" - slang for committing a robbery - that night, but watched the shooting from his home just north of the bar.

Stewart and Campbell ran to his house after the shooting, he said.

But inconsistencies in his testimony and prior statements he's made in court and to police were called "lies" by defense attorney James Goodwin.

The trial was recessed for lunch at noon and will resume at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
