Pittsburgh-area harness track firm files Chap. 11

HOUSTON, Pa. (AP) — The company that runs the harness racing operation at The Meadows Racetrack & Casino near Pittsburgh has filed Chapter 11.

MEC Pennsylvania Racing filed for the bankruptcy reorganization last week in Wilmington, Del. where the company is incorporated.

The company plans to consult with Cannery Casino Resorts, which runs the slot machine operation, on a way to make the harness track profitable. For now, officials say it’s business as usual for the track and casino.

Bankruptcy documents show MEC lost $2.6 million at the track and its off-track betting locations in western Pennsylvania. The company lists $4.9 million in assets against $4.7 million in liabilities.

The Meadows is in Houston, Pa. about 15 miles south of Pittsburgh.
