Man killed in loading dock accident

BARKEYVILLE — A Grove City man died after he was pinned between a loading dock and truck Wednesday evening at Ward Trucking Co.’s Barkeyville truck terminal.

Gene S. “Skeeter’’ Evanitz, of 231 North Broad St., Grove City, died from blunt force trauma to the thorax after the accident at the Venango County terminal, Dr. David Hoyt, Mercer County deputy coroner, said late Thursday afternoon.

The 48-year-old Evanitz was taken to Grove City Medical Center, Pine Township, where he was pronounced dead. The coroner’s office didn’t immediately have the time of death available but Scott A. Black Funeral Home listed the time of death as 9:16 p.m.

Dan Dillen, Ward Trucking’s director of risk management and safety, confirmed Evanitz was involved in an accident at the Barkeyville terminal but was unable to provide further details.

The company had notified the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration and was working with the agency in an ongoing investigation of the accident, Dillen said.

Ward Trucking has had fatalities of truck drivers involved in highway accidents over the years, but this was believed to be the first time a worker was killed at one of its terminals, Dillen said.

“Ward is family-owned and family-operated and we lost a family member today,’’ he said.
