Farrell area schools having pool programs

FARRELL — These classes are running through May 28 in Farrell Area School District’s swimming pool:
• Infant and toddler lessons — 5:10 to 5:45 p.m. Mondays; may cancel if not enough people register.
• American Red Cross swim lessons — Levels I through III, 5 to 5:50 p.m.; and Levels IV through VI, 6 to 6:45 p.m., all Mondays and Wednesdays. Costs are $25 for Farrell and Wheatland residents; $30 for non-residents.
• Water aerobics and arthritis therapy, sessions I and II — 7 to 7:55 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Costs are $25 for Farrell and Wheatland residents; $30 for non-residents.
• Lifeguard training course — 6 to 8 p.m., started April 2. Saturdays may be used. There is a fee.
• Adult lessons — 7 to 7:55 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Costs are $25 for Farrell and Wheatland residents; $30 for non-residents.

Candlelight vigil for those with eating disorders

HERMITAGE — The third annual National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders candlelight vigil will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Founders Room of Church of Notre Dame, 2325 Highland Road, Hermitage.
The event helps raise awareness of eating disorders and promotes a positive self-image through the “Accept Yourself ... Accept Others” theme. The group supports those suffering, those in recovery emphasizing recovery is possible, and remembers those whose lives were lost to the disease.
Dr. Maria Snyder will speak about healthy steps toward a positive attitude. Chris Panin will speak about the effects of massage therapy and the successful treatment of anorexia and bulimia.

County Historical Society announces events

MERCER — Mercer County Historical Society has planned events.
The group’s Rural Life Museum, a mile north of Mercer on state Route 58, on Munnell Run Farm, has opened for the season. Hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays, through September, weather permitting.
Dale Boyd, curator, will be on site to answer questions, explore displays and show patrons the artifacts displayed. Donations are accepted.
Mercer County Civil War Roundtable will present “Hell in a Small Place: Andersonville and Johnson Island Prisoner of War Camps” from 7 to 9 p.m. May 12 in the society’s headquarters at 119 S. Pitt St., Mercer. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
The society will have a used book sale May 17 as part of Mercer’s community-wide yard sale; and May 26, Memorial Day, both from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the society’s headquarters. In case of inclement weather, the sale will be in the society’s lobby.
The society’s headquarters will be open regular hours of 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays during the May 17 sale and special hours, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 26. Donations will be taken.
Bill Philson, the historical society’s executive director, will be a guest May 20 on the Ron Errett Radio Show on News Talk 790, WPIC. Post-Civil War Mercer County will be the topic. The program is available on the Internet at www.790wpic.com
Philson is a regular guest on the show at 5 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month.

ViBe Dance Academy ‘kicks it old school’

GREENVILLE — ViBe Dance Academy will present its second annual recital Saturday at Thiel College’s Passavant Center.
“Kickin’ It Old School” features students of all ages performing jazz, tap, lyrical, ballet and hip-hop dances to songs by artists including Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Beastie Boys, James Brown, Lynyrd Skynrd and Madonna.
The show starts at 6 p.m.; tickets are $7 at the door.

Help out missions project at rummage, bake sales

SANDY LAKE — Lakeview United Methodist Church will have its annual rummage and bake sale Thursday and Friday at the church, on Route 173 just south of Sandy Lake.
The sale is from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday. On Friday, all items will be $1 a bag.
Lunch will be available, along with baked goods, clothing, books and household goods.
Proceeds will benefit the church’s missions projects.
