SLIPPERY ROCK — Pennsylvania Hike Week will be celebrated at 1 p.m. May 31 at Jennings Environmental Education Center, near Slippery Rock. The basics of navigation using a global positioning system unit, map and compass will be covered. Info: 724-794-6011.
Tumble Zone awarding need-based scholarships
HERMITAGE — The Tumble Zone, 3830 East State Street Hermitage, will be awarding more than $5,000 in tuition scholarships in tumbling, gymnastics and competitive cheer for the 2008-2009 season; 6- through 15-year-old girls are eligible for the need-based scholarships. Applications are available Monday through Thursday evenings, after May 19, in The Tumble Zone. Sign-up deadline is July 31.
A copy of the student’s most recent report card and a short essay is required. Recipients will be announced Aug. 9.
Phipps hosts May Market, gardening experts
PITTSBURGH -- Join Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park and area garden clubs for a spring tradition where shoppers can find perennials, annuals, hanging baskets and herbs. Master gardeners will answer questions. Hours are: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 16 and 17 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 18.
Also, from noon to 4 p.m. May Friday, plant experts Doug Oster and Jessica Walliser will answer questions and will sign copies of their books.
And from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Joe Lamp’l, nationally syndicated host of GardenSMART on PBS and columnist, will sign copies of his latest book, “The Green Gardener’s Guide.”
