Meetings

• Sharon High School class of 1960 meets for brunch at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at The Cookery, Hermitage. All classmates welcome.
• The Westinghouse Retirees Association will meet at 10 a.m. May 28 at the Children’s Activity Center in Buhl Farm Park.
Candy makers from Daffins Candies, Sharon, will be attending the meeting.
• Sharon High School class of 1942 gathers at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Quaker Steak & Lube, Sharon.
• Grove City Caregiver Support Group meets at 10:30 a.m. May 21 at Orchard Manor, 20 Orchard Drive, Grove City.
The topic of discussion will be relaxation techniques for both caregivers and their loved ones.

Dinners

• The alumni of Fredonia Institute and Fredonia-Delaware Vocational High School will hold their annual dinner at 6 p.m. June 14 a Hempfield Station One Banquet Center, 20 Sixth Ave., Greenville.

The class of 1958 will be honored on their 50th anniversary.
• Community Counseling Center’s annual dinner will be held May 28 at Avalon Golf and Country Club at Buhl Park, Sharon.
In recognition of National Mental Health Month, Gina Kaye Calhoun, certified Peer Specialist and community interaction trainer for the Pennsylvania Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, is our keynote speaker. Her theme is “Journey of Hope.”
Ms. Calhoun is a mental health consumer in recovery who now has a full-time career after receiving Social Security disability for 20 years. She also experienced many years of mental heath institutionalization.
Recognition will be given to a person in recovery who has overcome challenges and obstacles; a volunteer who has positively influenced the mission of Community Counseling Center; and an organization whose contributions have helped mental health consumers live healthy and fulfilling lives.

Special events

• The ERASE Anti-Drug Coalition presents Saving our Communities “The March on Crime” at 6 p.m. May 27 starting at Idaho Street and Fruit Avenue, Farrell, and ending at Cedar Avenue and Plum Street, Sharon.
The rally will be at Musser Elementary School playground.
“Unite with us as we march through the streets of Farrell and Sharon challenging the citizens to make a stand,” organizers said in a release.

• A representative from the Governor’s Veterans Outreach and Assistance Center will be available from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Hickory Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6166, 5550 E. State St., Hermitage.
Veterans seeking assistance are encouraged to contact the representative at this time. Veterans should bring a copy of their DD-214.
Arrangements can be made for a representative to visit housebound veterans upon request. Veterans can contact the Erie headquarters at 1-800-352-0915.
• Safety & Awareness Run “Look Twice, Save a Live Motorcycles are Everywhere” will be held Saturday. All motorcyclists are invited to join the free group ride leaving at noon sharp from Sharon’s Quaker Steak & Lube parking lot to the Mercer County Courthouse for this Safety and Awareness Run.

• Sandy Lake Baptist Church welcomes Brian McBride and his family to conduct evangelistic meetings at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday.  Please join us for the special meetings, family gospel music, and life changing messages.

• Rally in the Valley is set May 23 from 6 p.m. until dark. Meet at McDonald’s in downtown Sharon then ride to Veteran’s Square Park, Farrell.
There will be free hot dogs and drinks and games for kids.
Ministries participating are Living Word Church, New Light Missionary Baptist Church, Christian Motorcycle Association, Shenango Valley Ministerial Association and Child Evangelism Fellowship.
Fundraisers

• The 4th annual K-9 S.O.S./Mercer County ABATE Poker Run is set for Sunday at the Clark House, 3590 Valley View Road, Clark. Sign-up from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; last bike out at 1 p.m. and last bike in at 6 p.m.
There will be food, 50/50 raffle, cash prizes, Chinese auction and live music.
Cost is $10 per and $15 per couple with a chicken dinner included. Tickets for dinner only, will be sold after 1 p.m. if available.
All vehicles are welcome and all donations accepted.
Proceeds benefit K-9 S.O.S. Search and Rescue Team. Details: 724-535-8542. The event will be held rain or shine.
• Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Department is sponsoring a yard sale and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the firehall, 1648 Bend Road.
Knick-knacks, furniture, dishes, children’s games, clothing, lamps and more.
There will be cookies, pies and breads and light lunch will be available.

• Laurel High School class of 1978 will hold its 30th class reunion Aug. 16 at Shad Hanna’s, New Castle. The reunion is also for vo-tech graduates.

Bus trip

• Penn Power Retirees & Friends of Clark will travel to Ocean City, Md., Sept. 14-18. • AARP Senior Safe Driving Program for May 19-20 will be two for the price of one at Pine Grove Community Center, North Street, Grove City.

• Former FBI agent and nationally known true crime author Jim Fisher will be discussing his book “Forensics Under Fire” at the Mercer Area Library, 143 N. Pitt St., at 7 p.m. May 19.
Fisher, professor emeritus at Edinboro University and author of the popular book, “Crimson Stain” will explain how forensic science in the U.S. has failed to live up to its potential in the administration of criminal justice.
He will highlight problems in the forensic identification of fingerprints, handwriting and firearms as well as failures in the nation’s crime laboratories.
The speech will be followed by a question and answer session and there will be time for Fisher to sign copies of his book.
