A West Middlesex group with an itch to delve into the town’s storied past plans to put history on display for a second straight year.
The borough will take a few steps back in time Aug. 2 and 3 for Old Fashioned Days, sponsored by West Middlesex Area Historical Society.
“We really want to try to show people what it was like many years ago,” said Maleia James, the group’s founder and president.
The celebration features many forms of entertainment, including outdoor movies and dancing that were once a staple of West Middlesex’s downtown area and other similar small communities, Ms. James said.
“It was a little old mill town,” said Victoria Van Hoose, also a member of the historical society. “There was a lot of hustle and bustle.”
The buildings in the area around the viaduct on Main Street were once the home of many more flourishing businesses nestled between the town’s two train stations, Ms. Van Hoose said.
Old Fashioned Days are an attempt to “re-create the feeling” of yesteryear as a way to both stir the memories of the area’s older folks and expose traditions to a new generation, Ms. James said.
The celebration’s first night begins at 5 p.m. Aug. 2 and runs until 9 p.m. with music and dancing, including a jitterbug contest.
A cruise-in featuring cars at least 30 years old will begin at noon and last until 5 p.m. on Aug. 3, along with rides in a Ford Model T coupe and Hupmobile, face painting, food, music by a barbershop quartet and other entertainment.
An outdoor showing of the 1927 science fiction film “Metropolis” will cap off the event, Ms. James said.
All events will be held on Mill Street and the adjacent parking lots, she said.
In case of inclement weather, rain dates are set for Aug. 9 and 10.
