MERCER COUNTY — Sharpsville Area Elementary joins four other Mercer County schools taking part in the state “Science: It’s Elementary” initiative.
Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell Tuesday announced 14 more districts chosen for the program, which allows kids to learn by doing.
Sharpsville will become part of the initiative, which already includes Farrell Area Elementary and Middle School, Hempfield Elementary School in Greenville, Mercer Area Elementary School and Musser Elementary in Sharon.
The program offered in 143 schools is expected to reach 67,000 students.
The “inquiry-based” education program provides classrooms with kits for experiments, a news release said.
Sandy Lake Presbyterian taking food sign-ups
SANDY LAKE — Signups for Angel Food Ministries will be taken from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 4 and 11 in Sandy Lake Presbyterian Church, 3461 Sandy Lake-New Lebanon Road, Sandy Lake Township.
Cost is $30 for $50 to $60 worth of groceries. August specials are a 7- pound family assorted grill box for $20; 4è-pound steak and meat combo box for $20, 4è-pound stuffed chicken breast combo for $18; and fresh fruit and vegetable box for $18.
One or more special boxes can be purchased with the $30 units. Cash, cashier’s checks, money orders or food stamps will be accepted for payment. Personal checks will not be accepted.
Food distribution will be 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Aug. 23 in the church. Participants should take a large box, basket or ice chest for pick up.
