Students compete in ‘The Great Book Race’


WEST MIDDLESEX — West Middlesex Area School District hosted “The Great Book Race,” a reading competition for grades 7 through 12, on Dec. 5. Approximately 170 students from Commodore Perry, Greenville, Grove City, Hickory, Jamestown, Kennedy Catholic, Sharon and West Middlesex competed in middle school and high school divisions.

The students competed in teams by answering questions about the 12 books they read in three rounds of 36 questions each, quiz bowl-style. The top three finishers in each division were recognized in an awards ceremony.

• Middle school division:

First – “Not So Average Joes” from Greenville Junior/Senior High School: Vijay Perry, Macrina Pochatko, Stephen Jaussen, Delany Brown, Danica Barry, Grace O’Malley, Brian Ross, Julia Giroski, Isaac Unruh, Roy Wilt, Melia Lenkner and Taylor Marsh.

Second – “The Bookies” from Greenville Junior/Senior High School.

Third – “The Lilly Pad” from Grove City Middle School.

• High school division:

First – “An Imperial Affliction” from Grove City High School: Bri Blanchard, Logan Cummings, Alaina Thomas, Bri Dailey, Alex Day, Alyssia Cochran, Briana Hites, Bill Hockenberry, Hayley McGuigan, Joe Coulter, Karli Sutton and Rebecca Aloisio.

Second – “The Fellowship of the Nerd” from Kennedy Catholic High School.

Third – “Team That Ends the Race” from Grove City High School.

The Great Book Race was coordinated by Geraldine Truog and Tiffany Riddle with the assistance of Casey Palko and the National Honor Society.
