Don’t miss Victorian days

In Our Neighborhood

The annual Mercer Victorian Weekend is coming Friday through July 22. And there’s plenty to do to get warmed up for the event.

On Friday evening, listen to the Mercer Community Band’s “Best of the Big Bands” and cool down with some ice cream from Eastern Star Chapter 180 on the courthouse lawn.

Earlier that day at 1 p.m. at Mercer Area Library, storyteller Amy Dittman will present a program on “Stories That Make You Giggle.”

Western Pennsylvania Civil War Re-Enactors will have their encampment on Saturday in Mercer County Historical Society’s backyard.

The celebration includes children’s activities, carriage rides, lots of food and a silent auction of Victorian hats, purses and other items. The arts and crafts will again be on the lawn, and bandstand entertainment includes a historic impressionist as President Theodore Roosevelt, the Mercer High School marching band, Mercer Variety Players-Mercer elementary students, Karen Elder’s clogging “Traveling Shoes” group, and more.

Brochures have been placed at businesses in Mercer and at the Chamber of Commerce. Get a schedule and plan which activities you want to attend.

The Grand Victorian Parade is set for 10 a.m. Saturday and new for this year is the Victorian/Civic Ball in the historic Mercer County Courthouse rotunda from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets are available at the information booth.

Nancy Ollinger will present a program entitled “Personalities from the Past” on both Saturday and Sunday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. next to Shannon’s Kandy Kitchen. Donations will be given to the graveyard association.

The Underground Railroad walking tour is scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. It starts at the historical society, 119 S. Pitt St. Bill Philson, executive director of the society, will be the presenter.

The Classic and Antique Car Show will be held July 22, rain or shine, on Diamond Street from 1 to 4 p.m. Registration will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the former Ben Bissett showroom building on North Pitt Street.
