Shenango Township boy realizes hunting dream by bagging a big 16-point buck

SHENANGO TOWNSHIP — Like many western Pennsylvania boys, Trey Romian dreams of the day when he’ll be able to go deer hunting like his father and older brother.

The 11-year-old son of Todd and Michelle Romian of Shenango Township realized that dream this fall, thanks to “Catch A Dream” an organization similar to Make-A-Wish Foundation that helps kids with life-threatening conditions realize outdoor adventures.

Trey was born with pulmonary atresia, a heart condition that has required three surgeries. Although he’s “doing very well now,” according to his mom, that wasn’t always the case.

In 2004, Trey got to meet NASCAR superstar Jeff Gordan thanks to Make-A-Wish. Earlier this year, Mrs. Romian heard about Catch A Dream and sent in an application for Trey.

They approved it and in September the Romians trekked to the backwoods of the Ozarks in Missouri so Trey could fish for rainbow trout and hunt whitetail deer.

He enjoyed fishing, but said it was the hunt that excited him.

“The day we went hunting I was up in the tree stand with mom, dad and our guide Richie,” he said, the enthusiasm bubbling in his voice.

His 15-year-old brother Taylor was in another stand with another guide.

After an hour “we saw a 16 point come out of the brush in the back,” he said.

They waited.

And waited.

“They finally got in the middle and he (the deer) just stopped,” Trey said.

He was so excited he was shaking.

“The gun was going up and down,” he said.

He calmed down enough to get steady, then “pulled the trigger and he went down like it was on TV,” Trey said. “He didn’t take a step.”

It was a 16-point white tail.

“One rack was big, the other was in velvet,” he said.
