Girl Scouts earn highest award

HADLEY — Six Girl Scouts from Troop 30434, Hadley, have attained the highest award given by the scouts, the prestigioius Girl Scout Gold Award.

Just 5 percent of those who have even been involved in Girl Scouts attain the award. This year nine girls from Mercer County captured the honor.

The award focuses on the leadership, effort, and impact that girls in grades 9-12 can have. Girls complete a community-based project that gets to the root cause of an issue they are passionate about and propose a sustainable change and demonstrate leadership.

The girls from Troop 30434, all students at Commodore Perry High School, have spent years earning petals, badges, IP’s, Journeys, and awards for projects they’ve completed in scouting.

The girls are:

• Autumn Campbell, daughter of Chris and Sharon Campbell. Autumn has been a Girl Scout for 11 years. Her project was an anti-bullying program for junior high students at Commodore Perry.

• Cristy Ennis, daughter of Larry and Gail Ennis. Christy has been a Girl Scout for 7 years. She held a retreat for girls in grades 6-9 at Emmanuel Christian Church.

• Lexie Grinnell, daughter of Eugene and Heidi Grinnell. A Girl Scout for 12 years, Lexie developed an eight-week basketball skills camp for elementary girls in grades 4-6.

• Tess Grinnell, daughter of Roger and Donna Grinnell. She has been a Girl Scout for 12 years. Tess created the "Caring Closet,”  stocked with clothes, hygiene products, school supplies and more for people in need. She also created a program to teach the elementary students the importance of healthy eating, exercise and good hygiene.

• Shanna McGowan, daughter of Lloyd and Debbie McGowan. A Girl Scout for 12 years, Shanna organized and led a two-week running, fitness, and nutrition clinic for 4th- 6th graders.

• Cassie Mozes, daughter of Ray and Lisa Mozes. She has been a Girl Scout for 13 years and held an elementary Volleyball Clinic for 4th-6th grades teaching basic skills and warms-ups.
