LTI student brings home gold

SHARON — Waltina Currie, Farrell, a member of Health Occupations Students of America at Laurel Technical Institute in Sharon, has returned from the State Leadership Conference in Lancaster, where she received a gold medal in Medical Spelling.

The local chapter newsletter, HOSA Happenings, also won Best in the State for the third consecutive year. Both Currie and the chapter newsletter are eligible to compete in the National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla., in June.

In addition to competitions, local HOSA students participate in community service projects. During the past year, they volunteered at WaterFire events in Sharon and at the Community Library of the Shenango Valley’s Wine and Cheese fundraiser. They made Red Cross Comfort Kits, provided screenings at several health fairs, provided administrative support for community flu shot clinics, and teamed with LTI’s Cosmetology Clinic and St. John’s Episcopal Church, Sharon, to provide free holiday portraits for persons in need.

Currie is the newly elected president of the LTI Sharon HOSA chapter.

She previously chaired the education committee.

Deborah Anderson of Hermitage is immediate past president and served as the newsletter editor.

Anderson will be presented with the newsletter award during a ceremony at the school.

HOSA is a national student organization of 120,000 members dedicated to promoting career opportunities in the health care field and supporting education and development of health care professionals.

Pennsylvania has 108 chapters with a membership of more than 3,000. Approximately 800 students competed at the conference in Lancaster.
