Memorial Day events

MERCER COUNTY — These are some of the events scheduled for this weekend to mark Memorial Day:


• The annual parade will form at 9:30 a.m. Monday on Grove Street, on the site of the former Brookfield Middle School. The parade begins at 10 a.m. and will travel west on Grove Street, then south on state Route 7 to the Brookfield Township cemetery. Veterans and community groups are welcome to participate.

Guest speaker will be Brookfield High School alumnus Bob Vaia, a staff sergeant in the Army. There will be a service at the veterans memorial on the east end of the cemetery.

At the end of the service. Brookfield Ladies’ Fire Auxiliary will host a community luncheon at the township banquet hall on state Route 7.


• The parade begins at 10 a.m. Monday at Indiana Avenue and Idaho Street. It will proceed down Roemer Boulevard to Spearman Avenue and end at Veterans Square for a program.

Retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. Kevin Leeds will speak. Farrell Area High School Band will provide music.

Grove City

• American Legion John R. Huff Post 220, Grove City, will host a Memorial Day ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday at Crestview Cemetery, followed by dinner at Post 220.


• St. Rose/St. Mary Cemeteries will hold a Memorial Day Mass at 9 a.m. Monday in St. Rose Cemetery Chapel.

• The annual parade begins at 10 a.m. Monday at Indian Run, turns south on North Hermitage Road and west onto East State Street to Hillcrest Memorial Park. East State between North Hermitage and Kerrwood Drive will be closed from about 9:45 to 11 a.m.


• For the fourth consecutive year, the Ladies Auxiliary of Mercer Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6345 and Cub Scout troops 83 and 159 will come together for the annual release of honorary balloons, adorned with the names, rank and dates of local soldiers killed in action in the Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The flag will be raised at 9 a.m. with the balloon ceremony to follow at the VFW, 432 Erie St.

The schedule for the Mercer Memorial Day 500 on Monday is:

8:30 a.m. – 5K race through the flags

9 a.m. – opening ceremony, race winners announced and honoree introductions

9 a.m. to 1 p.m. – military expo

9:30 to 11 a.m. – veterans reception

9:30 a.m. to noon – concessions available

10 to 11 a.m. – entertainment by Brett Allen Morgan

11 a.m. – Memorial parade

Noon – Memorial salutes

Living honorees are Air Force Reserves First Sgt. James Masotto, Sharon – Iraq and Afghanistan; John J. Takoch Sr., Hermitage – Army, World War II; and Phillip Schneider, Grove City – a Marine Corps lance corporal , Vietnam.

Posthumous honorees are: Army Pvt. First Class Robert T. Bruce, World War II; and Robert John Kelly “Jack” Craig, U.S. Merchant Marine, World War II..

• Soliders and wives of the 10th Pennsylvania Reserves, The Mercer Rifles, will camp on the grounds of the historic Bigler House, which will be open for public visitation from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. A ribbon cutting will mark the official opening of the restored Bigler House museum at 1 p.m. Sunday.


• The annual parade starts at 11 a.m. Monday at Case Avenue and proceeds west on East State Street to North Oakland Avenue and north to Oakwood Cemetery.


• The Lakeview community will gather at 10 a.m. Monday at Oak Hill Cemetery, Sandy Lake Township.

Sgt. First Class Jarett H. Buchanan of Grove City will speak. He has 13 years of service in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and is serving as the First Sergeant of Bravo Battery 1/107th Field Artillery. He was deployed to Iraq in 2006-07 and to Afghanistan in 2010.

Trail Life USA, Troop 2, of Stoneboro will serve as honor guard. Bagpiper will be Lawrence Bubeck, Chris Gilliland will sing the national anthem Lakeview High School Marching Band will provide musical selections.

Take a lawn chair. In case of bad weather, the observance will be moved to the Sandy Lake Wesleyan Church.
