A local couple is excited to have their neighbors from the Shenango Valley plan their wedding for them and celebrate it on May 17 at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown – if they receive enough votes to win the annual WFMJ wedding contest.
Sandy Speir and Dave Airgood, both Hermitage, are finalists in the Youngstown television station’s contest. They said they have been “running nonstop” since they learned Tuesday they should spread the word. Online voting started Wednesday and ends at noon Sunday.
Dave proposed to Sandy in November in front of the Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World in Florida.
The couple met about five years ago, when Dave went to lunch at a restaurant in Greenville that he never knew existed before that day. Sandy worked there.
“I fell in love with her when I saw her,” Dave said.
On that first day, Dave found out Sandy’s favorite color is pink, she had just gotten a new car, and she worked the following Sunday. He returned later and left a dozen pink roses on her car with the note, “See you Sunday.”
The couple have been together ever since.
Dave races late model cars at Sharon Speedway and other tracks and said that Sandy is “on my pit crew.”
