- — ‘Dining with Diabetes’ classes start today

FARRELL – Mercer County Cooperative Extension offers “Dining with Diabetes: A Program for Adults with Diabetes and their Families” to teach people to better manage their disease through smart food choices.

Dietitian Katherine French and culinary instructor and dietitian Christine Martello present the four weekly classes plus one follow-up class three months later.

There is no cost for those on Medicare or Medicaid. For others, the cost is $40 for an individual and $15 for an additional family member.  The fee includes all educational materials, lab tests and food tasting.

The series will be from noon to 2:30 p.m. today and Feb. 4, 11 and 18  in Greater Mount Zion Church, 1825 Roemer Blvd., Farrell.

Hospital sets teen volunteer orientation

SHARON – Sharon Regional Health System challenges young people to explore new opportunities as a Teen Volunteer. The hospital’s program designed to show interested teens how many different medical and health care careers are needed in a community hospital. Teens will be given the option to choose their own times and areas of service during the school year.

Students, 14-18 years of age, can become Teen Volunteers by calling 724-983-3806 to obtain an application and reference letter and attending an orientation class scheduled for  3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 20 in the School of Nursing second floor simulation lab, across the parking lot from the Emergency Care Center.

Only those teens attending the class and bringing a completed application and reference letter will be accepted into the program.

The program is open year-round with orientation classes being held in February, June and November.
