Farm Safety Day set next week

MERCER COUNTY — Mercer County Cooperative Extension will host the 2014 Mercer County Farm Safety Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at Leslie N. Firth Learning Center and adjacent 4-H Park, 463 N. Perry Highway, north of Mercer in Coolspring Township.

The Agricultural Health and Rural Safety Advisory Committee, local agricultural sponsors, and Extension staff invite you and your family to actively participate in a day of safety demonstrations and open discussion. The best defense against accidents is prevention, and prevention begins with educating yourself and others about behaviors which increase the odds of an accident.

Members of Amish communities are invited to attend and join in the discussion on highway safety issues. Presentations from survivors of several local farm accidents will exemplify how these traumatic accidents forever changed their lives.

In addition, the Penn State Tractor Stability Simulator – a full-size tractor cab designed to allow participants to experience what a roll-over feels like without actually putting your safety at risk – will make a repeat appearance, one of many scheduled activities. Be prepared for an active and hands-on day of learning.

It is requested that youth younger than 8 be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Farm Safety Day is free for all youth thanks to the generosity of program sponsors. Lunch will be available at no charge to youth and for a suggested $2 donation for adults to help defray costs.

Preregistration by Tuesday is required and can be made by calling 724-662-3141 and selecting mailbox 301.
