Munnell Run Farm hosting kids programs

MERCER — Munnell Run Farm is hosting kids summer programs designed to keep kids busy by offering adventures to see and learn about animals.

The programs are scheduled for Fridays in June and July. Classes will meet from 9 to 11 a.m. in the ‘Pig Barn’ at Munnell Run Farm, 753 Greenville Road, Mercer.

“Baby Bird” program is open to ages 3-6 and must be accompanied by an adult or teenager older than 14. The “Fledgling” program is for ages 7-12. Both age group classes will be held at the same time but split for activities.

The “Baby Bird” classes will follow the general format of a story, a walk, and a craft/snack time. The “Fledglings” program will consist of a longer walk/hike, more elevated learning material, and a craft/snack.

• Friday: Farm animals – explore the life of farm animals and learn about how food gets to your fork. Take a ride on our wagon through the fields. Then stick around to make old-fashioned homemade ice cream.

• June 20: Wetland creatures – meet some expected and unexpected creatures that call Munnell Run home. Check out birds, small animals and bugs – specifically “macros” that live in the water. Make sure to wear old shoes and bring along  bug repellent.

• July 11: Woodland wonders – head to higher ground to walk through the farm’s woodlot to look, listen, and feel nature all around, from the forest floor to the tops of the trees.

• July 25: Friends of the fields – Fields are more than just squares of green. Learn about animals that like wide open spaces including butterflies, then take a wagon up to the field to catch a few.

Classes can be purchased individually at $10 per child or as a package of all four classes at a discount of $30 per child. Preregister by the Wednesday before the class (for example, by June 11 for the June 13 class). To preregister or for questions, call 724-662-2242 and ask for Jacqueline or Larissa.
