Program seeks senior students

- — Are you up to STEAM?

Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV, Grove City, and five Shenango Valley school districts are looking for students who want to participate in a new program, the Entrepreneurship Academy@LindenPointe.

Five students each will be selected from Hermitage, Sharon, Farrell, Sharpsville and West Middlesex schools to participate in a program that will run for about 2è hours a day, four days a week at the eCenter@LindenPointe, the business incubator in Hermitage.

The students must be seniors during the 2014-15 school year, when the academy will open.

Students with interests in the STEAM disciplines – science, technology, engineering, arts and math – will learn about business and career opportunities and creating business plans and oral and written presentations with technological aids. They will visit businesses, career centers and universities.

The for-credit curriculum was developed by the Franklin Center of Beaver County.

The class culminates with five-member teams – one member from each district – developing STEAM-related business plans. The teams will make presentations to a panel of judges and the winning team will receive $2,500.

Interested students can apply through their schools and must have teacher and administrator recommendations. Final decisions are made by an intermediate unit committee.

Deadline for applications is Friday.

The first-year program cost is $240,000, with the state Department of Community and Economic Development paying $100,000 and the rest coming from the schools, the intermediate unit and the city of Hermitage.
