Although the Reynolds Academic Decathlon team did not qualify for state competition, it finished its season with a total of 16 bronze medals and three silver medals in Academic Sports League competitions.
Academic Decathlon is a series of 10 events. This year’s theme was World War I.
Students studied art, music, language/literature, mathematics, science, social science and economics, wrote essays and participated in a super quiz relay with questions on World War I. There were also two subjective events, “speech” and “interview,” which tested the students on presentation and speaking skills.
The City of Erie School District sponsored the ASL competitions that were designed to prepare teams from western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio for regional and state competitions.
Participating in this year’s Academic Decathlon Western Pennsylvania Regional Competition from Reynolds were: Lucas Sallmen, Kenneth Findley and Hunter Cawthorne in “honors”; Gwyn Dubel, Rebecca John and Katherine Campbell in “scholastic”; and Ashley Pugh, Brandon Mills and Zachary Taylor in “varsity.”
Senior Ashley Pugh earned silver medals in “music” and in “language/literature,” junior Brandon Mills earned a gold medal in “science” and a silver medal in “social science,” and sophomore Zachary Taylor received a bronze medal in “interview.”
“We had a great season and we got out what we put into it – new friendships, more knowledge and the chance to broaden our horizons,” Ashley said.
