Card shower planned for Orville Dean’s 93rd
GREENVILLE – A card shower will be held for Orville Dean who will celebrate his 93rd birthday on March 6. A family dinner is being planned to honor him.

Apple Castle hosts pruning demonstration
NEW WILMINGTON – Apple Castle, a family-owned and operated farm and farmers market at 277 state Route 18, north of New Wilmington, is the site of a pruning demonstration from 10 a.m. to noon March 8.
The demonstration will be led by Lyle and Steven Johnston, owners of the Apple Castle, and Tim Warrick, orchard manager.
Cost to attend is $5 a person with the proceeds being donated to the State Horticultural Association of Pennsylvania. The state association funds research and Cooperative Extension projects, including the study of the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, known for being a nuisance pest to homeowners as well as causing millions of dollars in damage to Pennsylvania fruit crops. Those attending should dress for the weather and be aware that terrain will be uneven.
Water conservation is focus of home tour
SLIPPERY ROCK – Jennings Environmental Education Center, near Slippery Rock, will offer a tour featuring local homes that have adopted various water conservation practices from 1 to 5 p.m. March 8. The tour supports the iConserve Pennsylvania initiative that encourages people to “take conservation personally.”
The tour will showcase water conservation practices that anyone can adopt, including techniques for using water more wisely, both indoors and outdoors; directing and collecting rainwater; capturing water for home and garden use; and protecting and improving water quality.
The event is designed for ages 16 and older. Space is very limited. Transportation will be provided. Preregister by Friday; prepayment of $5 per person is required by March 5.
