Television crews focus on farming

Reality show comes to auction

MERCER — Life’s interesting with a camera crew filming most every move you make, Lisa King said.

“It ain’t easy,” said the mother of 10. “It’s almost like taking on another job.”

King’s the matriarch of a Butler-area farming clan that’s the subject of a cable television reality show set to air in the fall.

“Farm Kings” is to air on Great American Country. Check your cable or satellite channel lineup to see if it’s available to you.

The show will focus on the King brood of mainly boys. Lisa King has nine sons and one daughter. The youngest is 11, the oldest is 29. On Tuesday, Lisa King and 22-year-old Daniel were in Coolspring Township at the Mercer Livestock auction, with a camera crew in tow.

The crew surrounded them as they walked the grounds of the auction, checking out the cattle set to be sold, as videographers, sound engineers and producers bustled around them.

“We just want to be ourselves,” Lisa King said during a break in the filming.

The show will focus on the King brothers as they work to diversify their Valencia-based farming operation, Daniel King said.

“It’s a learning experience,” he said.

They went to the auction to learn about livestock, which they’re hoping to start raising.

They farm 150 acres in Butler County and sell produce at several markets there. Last year, they were featured in the August/September issue of Edible Allegheny magazine. That story caught the attention of reality show producers Stage 3 productions, and Great American Country picked up 10 episodes for its fall lineup, Daniel King said.

None of the farmers at Tuesday’s auction objected to being a part of the show and auction owner Rod Loomis said it was fun to play host to the Kings and the camera crew.

“It was a great day. It was fun,” Loomis said.

The Kings bid on a couple cows, but ended up not buying anything, Loomis said.

There’s talk they may return to film another segment for the show, he said.

A preview of the show will air at 9 p.m. June 14 and the series will premiere in September.
