Relay for Life this weekend ‘waves’ cancer good-bye

MERCER — Twenty-five registered teams will gather this weekend for Relay For Life Mercer, with volunteers having planned for cancer-fighting event.

Activities are scheduled to provide the public with 24 hours of family fun from 9 a.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday at the Mercer High School track arena, 545 W. Butler Street, Mercer.

The theme for this year’s Relay is “Life is a Beach – Wave Cancer Good-Bye!” This is the 20th year for Relay For Life Mercer, the oldest relay in Mercer County.

Admission is free and the public is invited to come walk a few laps.

The relay opens with Purple Power Hour. All in attendance  are encouraged to dress in purple, the universal color of hope. Prizes will be awarded for the best displayed Relay spirit.

Local bands are providing entertainment this year. Makin’ Changes plays from 1 to 3 p.m. under the main tent. Juvenile Characters will play at the “after party” segment of Relay, scheduled to begin at 11 p.m.

Traditional Relay For Life ceremonies begin at 5 p.m. Saturday under the main tent.

Survivor Recognition will take place followed by the Survivor Lap and Reception. Caretakers will also be honored. The third annual butterfly release and program will be held to remember those lost to cancer and to celebrate survivors.  

The Fight Back ceremony begins at 7 p.m. The featured speaker is local resident Jodie Mohndern. At 9 p.m., participants will make their way to the bleachers for the Luminaria ceremony. The ceremony incorporates music and the reading of each name for whom luminaria have been made for, candlelight and the Silent Lap, with all who attend the ceremony participating.  

Other activities include: Best Dressed Miss Hula Relay contest at 3:30 p.m., frozen t-shirt contest at noon, a horseshoe tournament at 2 p.m. and fun laps. Raffles will be held and food will be available throughout the day.  

A sunrise church service will be held at 7 a.m. Sunday under the main tent with speaker Jodie Miklas. Closing ceremony is at 9 a.m.
