Hospital cites art students

SHARON — Sharon Regional Health System recently recognized area art students who received awards in its first student art contest. The contest was open to students in all high school art programs in Mercer County with the theme “Beauty is More than Skin Deep: Healthy, Active, and Wise.”

Contest coordinators were Jessi McCloskey, director of Sharon Regional’s Cancer Care Center, and Netta Stitt, treatment team liaison from Behavioral Health Rehabilitative Services.

Eleven students from Farrell, Hermitage, Reynolds, and Wilmington school districts submitted a total of 20 art pieces choosing from pencil, paint, or photography media. The artwork was displayed at Sharon Regional’s Cancer Care Center, where judges scored the pieces based on originality, creativity, inspiration, clarity of the theme, and overall impression.

Sarah Behm, a ninth-grader at Wilmington, took both first and second place, earning a $50 prize for herself and an additional $200 cash prize for Wilmington’s art program. Earning third-place recognition was Daniella Maule from Hermitage. Honorable mentions were awarded to Bryce Benic of Hermitage and Kassi Tofani of Reynolds.

The Sharon Regional Health Foundation sponsored the prizes and the reception that was held for the participants, their families and their art teachers at the Cancer Care Center on May 16.

Sharon Regional’s Cancer Care Center welcomes submissions of artwork from local artists. For information about displaying your art at the Cancer Care Center, contact Jessi McCloskey at 724-983-5921.
