Master Gardeners offer training class

MERCER — Mercer County Master Gardeners are accepting applications to join the training class of 2013. As class size is limited, applicants will be selected by an interest in horticulture and a commitment to complete the required volunteer and educational hours.

Penn State Master Gardeners are volunteers trained by Penn State Cooperative Extension to educate the home gardening public on the latest research-based practices in gardening and environmental stewardship.

A Master Gardener trainee is required to attend 42 hours of classes, pass the exam at the end of classes and perform 50 hours of service for the Master Gardener organization. Certified Master Gardeners are required to perform 20 hours of service and complete eight hours of continuing education each year to maintain their certification.

Among their activities, the Master Gardeners staff an online and telephone helpline for local residents. They publish informational brochures and a newsletter, provide speakers to schools and libraries and maintain several demonstration gardens. Master Gardeners also share their interests and expertise with a variety of community groups including youth, senior citizens and community gardening projects. While the common bond is a vital interest in horticulture, individual Master Gardeners bring a wide range of experience and interests to the organization.

Applications for the training class to begin in October are being accepted until Sept. 6. Classes will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Cost is $175. Classes will be held at the Penn State Extension Office, 463 North Perry Highway, Mercer.
