- — Quota Club offering college scholarships

HERMITAGE – Quota Club of Hermitage is accepting applications for scholarships. Applicants must be a junior or higher level college student majoring in speech and hearing, audiology, or a related major and must have a grade-point-average of 3.0 or above.

Military social worker to speak at annual dinner

HERMITAGE – Community Counseling Center’s annual dinner is scheduled for May 15 at Avalon Golf and Country Club at Buhl Park in Hermitage.

Guest speaker Lt. Col. Thomas J. Stokes will present “Beyond Military Culture, the Human Being Behind the Uniform.”

Stokes serves in the Army Reserves as a military social worker and recently served as commander of the 328th Medical Detachment, Combat and Operational Stress Control Unit based in Coraopolis.

From April 2010 to April 2011, he served a yearlong deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, where he was the officer in charge at the combat stress clinic at Forward Operating Base Gardez, responsible for all behavioral health care for the more than 10,000 military personnel at Paktia Province. During his Afghan tour, Stokes had a filmmaker embedded with him who was producing a documentary, “Journey to Normal,” scheduled for release this year.

A social worker and registered nurse, Stokes has 29 years’ experience in behavioral health with the Allegheny County Department of Human Services in Pittsburgh, and a year as a veterans court advocate for Veterans Affairs in Pittsburgh.  

Farm management plan seminar set at library

 MERCER – Mercer Area Library, 110 E. Venango St., holds an informative day dealing with farm management issues from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 24.

Farms generating or using manure are required to have written management plans that meet state regulations.

Lunch will be provided.
