4-H gets $2,500 thanks to McCullough family

MERCER COUNTY — Monsanto Corp. earlier this month presented an America’s Farmers Grow Communities award of $2,500 to the Mercer County 4-H program, thanks to local farmers Bonnie and William McCullough III.

The McCulloughs were among 82,000 farmers from 1,289 counties in 39 states to participate in the program this year.

They chose Mercer County 4-H because of their strong roots in the program. Bonnie was a former member of a Lawrence County 4-H Club and a leader in Mercer County.

Their daughter Beth Carlson was the first female to earn grand champion beef in Mercer County. Their son William II also participated in the 4-H program and they have three grandchildren – Becky, Brooke and Taylor – completing projects in county 4-H clubs.

The McCulloughs run McCullough Grain, a family-owned country grain elevator and farm in Jefferson Township. David and Speed McCullough own the business.

The award will allow 4-H to improve its embryology program by updating supplies for the classroom, to introduce a junk drawer robotics program, to underwrite costs for an urban program for youth participation in animal science projects, and to train leaders in a water safety program.

“Our county is thrilled to receive this grant,” said Denise Suereth, Mercer County Cooperative Extension educator for 4-H and youth development. “This donation will help us with several projects we have been working on. We expect great things from our youth, and are so grateful for Bonnie and her family for thinking of us.”

America’s Farmers Grow Communities launched in 2010 and has donated more than $13 million to more than 5,200 nonprofit organizations across the country.
