Frontiers Club event is Saturday

MERCER COUNTY — Jeanette Odem Whitehead will speak at the 39th Annual Awards Luncheon of the Mercer County Frontiers Club. The event will be held at noon Saturday in Park Inn by Radisson in Shenango Township.

Mrs. Whitehead has been with Hermitage School District since 1993. As a school counselor, Mrs. Whitehead is a vital member of the education team. A school counselor’s priorities are to ensure that students perform their best academically as well as to provide educational and career guidance.

Mrs. Whitehead earned a bachelor of arts degree in social work from Gannon University, Erie, and a master of arts degree in counseling services from Slippery Rock University. She also has a Pennsylvania certification in secondary guidance from SRU, an associate’s degree in business administration from Penn State University and a Pennsylvania certification in secondary administration from Youngstown State University.

In addition to her counseling duties, Mrs. Whitehead has been the head girls basketball coach in Hermitage since 1995. She was a basketball standout in high school and college. She says coaching involves teaching life skills, along with how to play the game and team skills.

Mrs. Whitehead has been actively involved in the community. She has served on several boards, including: the Mercer County Unit of the NAACP; Shenango Valley Urban League; Mercer County Drug and Alcohol Commission; and the Community Counseling Center, She has also been active with the Mercer County United Way and the Gang Task Force of Mercer County.

Community service is of utmost importance to Mrs. Whitehead. Earlier this year, she initiated a program at Hickory High School called the “Silver Cords” to encourage students to give back to the community in which they live.

A graduate of Sharon High School, Mrs. Whitehead is a daughter of Mary E. Odem and the late John Odem. She is a member of Community Missionary Baptist Church, where she is the matron of the Junior Usher Board, a member of the Senior Usher Board, and a member of the Education Committee. She is married to Donald Whitehead. They have two children, a daughter, Neely, and a son, Donald Jr.

The Frontiers Club is a community service organization with a primary focus on African American youth.

The organization will present the Community Service Award to Kelvin and Kurt Chester for their many years of service to Farrell – Wheatland Little League.

Scholar Recognition Awards will be presented to African American graduates of high schools in Mercer County and Brookfield, who completed an academic program above high school, primarily in 2012. Five scholarships will be presented to African American graduating seniors of area high schools.
