- — Grove City celebrates Christmas on Dec. 7

GROVE CITY – Olde Town merchants and businesses will get in the spirit of Christmas Dec. 7 as Olde Town Grove City hosts Light Up the Night.

The evening will begin with family activities. Wander through Olde Town and enjoy business open houses, strolling Christmas characters, and carolers. Stop by The Hub at 248 S. Broad St. for children’s activities from 4 to 6 p.m. and enjoy a hayride, leaving from the Joseph D. Monteleone Youth Festival Park.

Other activities include a live nativity and creche at Grace United Methodist Church and a train exhibit at Tower Presbyterian Church. At 5:45 crowds will gather at the gazebo for carols and songs from the Grove City Area High School Show Choir followed by the lighting of the downtown Christmas decorations and Santa’s arrival.

From 6:15 to 7 p.m., Santa will meet with children at Candy Cane Lane in Steigerwald’s Kitchen and Baths.

Penn State prof to give Beatles presentation

SHARON – Ken Womack, the 2013-14 Penn State University laureate and professor of English and integrative arts at Penn State Altoona, will be speaking at Penn State Shenango from noon to 1 p.m. Dec. 4. The title of his presentation in Sharon Hall room 105 is “Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!: The evolving artistry of the Beatles.”

Established in 2008, the Penn State laureate is a full-time university faculty member in the humanities or fine arts who is assigned for one academic year to bring an enhanced level of social, cultural, artistic and human perspective and awareness to a broad array of audiences.

In addition to teaching, Womack serves as senior associate dean for academic affairs. He is the author of three novels, John Doe No. 2 and the Dreamland Motel (2010), which earned ForeWord Reviews’ Bronze Award for Literary Fiction; The Restaurant at the End of the World (2012), which earned a Gold Medal from the Independent Publisher Book Awards for Best Regional Fiction; and Playing the Angel, which is forthcoming. Womack is also the author or editor of numerous works of nonfiction, including Long and Winding Roads: The Evolving Artistry of the Beatles (2007) and The Cambridge Companion to the Beatles (2009), which was named as The Independent’s Music Book of the Year. His latest Beatles-oriented work, The Beatles Encyclopedia: Everything Fab Four, will be released in February in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the group’s legendary appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show.

Womack’s presentation traces the band’s emerging songwriting practices, recording artistry, and musicianship from their early, primitive recordings through the aesthetic heights of Abbey Road. He illustrates the group’s artistic growth through a wide range of musical and film illustrations.
