LTI’s HOSA team wins gold

SHARON — The Health Occupations Students of America Competition Team from Laurel Technical Institute, Sharon, returned from their state leadership conference in Lancaster with medals.

These students won gold medals in their individual events: Jessica Roche, Sharon, nutrition; Megan Patton, Sharpsville, extemporaneous health education poster; Patti Wolford, Jamestown, medical reading; Candy Hummel, Hermitage, biotechnology; and Nicole Reda, Mercer, medical spelling.

Dawn Alexander, Hermitage, served as HOSA delegate to the general assembly and won fourth place in medical terminology. For the second year in a row, the group’s newsletter, HOSA Happenings, was recognized as best in the state. Candy Hummel, editor, accepted the award. All five medalists qualify to compete at the National Leadership Conference in Nashville in June.

HOSA is a national student organization of 120,000 members dedicated to promoting career opportunities in the health care field, as well as supporting education and development of health care professionals. Student chapters are organized for high school through college levels, encompassing a wide variety of health care professions.

LTI’s HOSA team competed against other students representing colleges, universities, and high schools from across the state.
