Landscape workshop will benefit park

HERMITAGE — Organizers of the Shenango Valley Landscape Management Workshop hope professional landscapers and grounds crew workers will come for the two-day event, but homeowners also could learn a lot from it, said coordinator Corey Wise.

Cottage Gardens, Hermitage, is putting on the workshop Tuesday and Wednesday, but any money made above expenses will go to Buhl Farm park in Hermitage, where it will be held, he said.

“It’s a nonprofit workshop,” said Wise, director of landscape operations for Cottage Gardens. “All the money goes to Buhl park.”

Jim Funai, a certified arborist from Cuyahoga County Community College, will teach pruning techniques on park vegetation; a state police trooper will discuss the do’s and don’ts of truck and trailer safety; representatives of Unilock will show paving and retaining wall construction; an L.S. Training trainer will talk about lawnmower safety; and agents of Pennsylvania State University Cooperative Extension will lecture on soils and weeds.

Vendors will display equipment, vehicles, insurance options and related products.

Park General Manager Patrick B. O’Mahony said some of the park’s crew will participate in the workshop.

“It’s the first year we’ve done this,” he said. “I think it will be very nice.”

Wise said he expects the state police trooper’s talk to be very informative. He said he sees lots of landscape companies with pickups pulling trailers full of equipment that is not properly fastened, and Pennsylvania companies going into Ohio when their trucks are not properly marked for Ohio service.

The trooper and Funai will take up the agenda Tuesday, while the other presenters will appear Monday.

Admission is $65 for two days or $45 for one, and registration is requested, but people can walk in each morning and register.

The workshops runs from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day, starting at the park’s Casino, and include a bag lunch.
