Historical Society annual dinner set

MERCER COUNTY — The Mercer County Historical Society’s annual dinner is set for May 8.

The evening begins with appetizers in the library at society headquarters at 5:30 p.m. The dinner, business meeting and program start at 6.

The program presented by David M. Miller and William C. Philson will be on Mercer born John Armor Bingham, a congressman, a major during the Civil War, a prosecutor of those who helped in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and in the impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson, the first real minister from the United States to Japan, and much more.

May 1 is the deadline for ticket requests.

Other upcoming programs:

• “Medicine and Surgery from the Civil War” by Dr. Robert Dreisbach for the Civil War Discussion Group on May 13. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; program starts at 7.

• A new History in the Making discussion group on May 20. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; program starts at 7 on “Tora, Tora, Tora,” the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. The group will then attempt to tie events and personalities to Mercer County history.
