Momentum builds for soapbox derby

---- — Soapbox derby cars are shaping up in shop class at Sharpsville High School for the upcoming adult fundraiser race for the Greater Pennsylvania Super Kids soapbox derby race later in June.

The adult soapbox derby is mostly for fundraising -- but also fun.

Racers will take their marks at 11 a.m. June 8 on Seventh Street between Milliken and Ridge avenues in Sharpsville. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m.

Ryan Miller, shop teacher at the school, and his kids have their work cut out for them before their cars can be put into motion.

Miller said he was given a soapbox model from last year and they tore it apart in class to see how it was made. The new soapbox cars are being built from scratch – and students are not required to work on them.

“Some take pride in the project,” Miller said. “In particular, freshmen volunteers are excited about the project.”

Ninth-graders Brennan Manning, Zach Pisarcik, Justin Morris and Skyler Salvatore were helping with body work, hoping to be a part of painting the cars.

Pam Dorfi has been the race director for the three years the race has taken place.

She said there will be a testing day so kids who helped build the cars can take pleasure in the final product.

“It’s so great the high school is doing cars for us because we wrecked them last year,” Dorfi said.

Since some racers got scared at the hill and ran over the curbs, 2,100 feet of 6-inch PVC piping was purchased so anyone coming close to the curb will bounce right off it.
