4-H’ers bring home awards

MERCER COUNTY — Mercer County 4-H horse project members earned 16 awards at the 54th annual State 4-H Horse Show last month at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg.

About 800 youth and 969 horses competed in 52 performance and 90 production classes at this year’s show.

The state show is the final competition of the year for 4-H horse members enrolled in performance and production horse projects. To be eligible for the show, members must advance through qualifying competitions at county, regional and district levels. Events include breed conformation and futurity classes for horses 5 years old and younger in the production division. The performance division includes showmanship, horsemanship, equitation, pleasure, over fences, driving, Western riding, reining, trail and timed events. A therapeutic riding division for riders with special needs is also included.

Mercer County 4-H Equine State participants came back with a first- place ribbon for the Good Housekeeping Award. Mercer County 4-H member Nicole Opatrny of Cochranton placed first in Pole Bending Horses, Senior Rider and Clover Leaf Barrel Race Horses, Senior Rider; and Kate McCann of Greenville placed third in Pole Bending Horses, Senior Rider.

Aubrey Braham of Grove City placed first for 2-year-old fillies and third place for 2-year-old Jennnets.

Other Mercer County 4-H members who competed are: Casey Baselj, Grove City; Jodi Cole, Carlton; Jessica Gander, Stoneboro; Madison Kimes, Mercer; Sophia Martin, Volant; Morgan Minor, Jackson Center; Jake Opatrny, Cochranton; Miranda Schimp, Mercer; and Makenzie Hause, Keegan McCann and Julia Stell, all Greenville.

More than 6,500 4-H horse projects involve youth throughout Pennsylvania. Programs are designed to develop life skills in youth and knowledge of horse production, use, and management.
