SHENANGO VALLEY — The woman who ran the Shenango Valley Meals on Wheels program for more than four decades has stepped down as director.

Ruth Brutt, 80, still volunteers for the organization she helped start in 1970 at Christ Lutheran Church, Sharon.

Brutt retired in November as director of the long-running food ministry that still operates out of Christ Lutheran’s kitchen but now is an ecumenical ministry of the entire valley.

Arlene Horkey was appointed, with Brutt’s recommendation, as the new director. A retired teacher, Horkey has been a frequent volunteer and substitute for Brutt and assistant director Tom Barker when either were away or on sick leave.

Brutt will be honored with a retirement dinner Jan. 19 at Faith Presbyterian Church, state Route 18, Hermitage. Tickets for the catered lunch are $10.

Call the Meals on Wheels office at 724-342-2042 to reserve a seat for the dinner, to volunteer or request meal service.

Donations to the program in Brutt’s honor may be sent to Christ Lutheran Church, 396 Buhl Blvd., Sharon.
