Man who lost dog in lake raising money for rescuers

HERMITAGE — A Hermitage man who lost his dog in Shenango River Lake has raised $3,730 for the Callahan Fund in his quest to get lake rescuers new equipment and training.

Tim Vesonder met with the Water Safety Council Wednesday night to present the funds to the fire departments that cover areas of the lake.

“With these funds, we will be able to fulfill everyone’s wish list,” said Vesonder. “Shenango VFW said they were donating $500 now and $500 at a later date to the Sharpsville Fire Department and I expect to receive more money from other local businesses,” he said.

The council decided that equipment will be purchased by each department, to be reimbursed by the Callahan Fund. Items include exposure suits, floatation vests, ice awls, rope-throw bags, water-rescue helmets, reach poles and rescue slings.

The Callahan Fund was formed by Vesonder in honor of his 8-month-old golden retriever, Callahan. In January 2012, Callahan fell through a layer of ice at the lake. Vesonder and several others who heard the 911 call watched helplessly as the puppy paddled for 55 minutes before running out of energy and drowning.

Contributions to the Callahan Fund can be mailed to 3336 Lamor Road, Hermitage, PA 16148; or by depositing directly into the fund at any PNC Bank in Mercer County.
