Dad kept son’s life afloat
A Father’s Day remembrance
Dave Hoffman is at a woodworkers’ tool show today but he will be thinking about his dad as he often does, especially on Father’s Day.
Archie R. Hoffman Jr. was a metalworker who years ago regularly took his young son to the family business in downtown Sharon. Generations of Hoffmans had earned their living at J.C. Hoffman & Son, 332 Shenango Ave.
Dave, of Hermitage, is a machinist, woodworker and woodcarver. He began learning about tools as a boy from his dad.
Archie, who died two years ago, turned sheet metal into roofing and furnace ducts and stainless steel into rain spouting. Dave watched to see how the work was done, just as Archie had learned by watching his father.
Here is Dave’s story telling how resourceful Archie resurrected a storm-mangled fishing boat in keeping with the family’s metalworking skills that Peter Hoffman brought with him from Germany more than a century ago.
Archie died March 22, 2012.
