Cynthia Marie Magyary

Wilmington school music teacher served in church

- — Cynthia Marie Magyary of Wynfield Lane, New Wilmington, ran into the arms of her Heavenly Father and waiting parents on Monday evening, April 7, 2014, after a brave battle with cancer. She was 57.

Miss Magyary was born June 3, 1956, in New Brighton, Pa., the beloved daughter of Nicholas and Mary Bedo Magyary.

Cynthia was the music teacher at Wilmington Area Elementary School from 1983 to 2004, encouraging hundreds of young hearts to love the gift of music. Recently, many of those same students participated when the Wilmington High School Chorus came to her house to sing for her as she directed from her bed.

Cynthia was a graduate of Geneva College, Beaver Falls, earning a bachelor of science degree in elementary and music education. She then earned her master’s of music from Youngstown State University.

She was a member of New Wilmington Kiwanis, PMEA (Pennsylvania Music Educators Association) and Lawrence County Christian Women.

Cynthia shared her gift for music by playing for residents at local nursing homes including Shenango Home in New Wilmington. She especially enjoyed many trips to the Lancaster theaters to see live shows with her parents and, later, with friends.

Cynthia’s love of music continued at Neshannock Presbyterian Church, where she was a member, serving as organist, pianist, youth choir director and hand bell choir director. She served many years as vacation Bible school director at the church.

Although Cynthia had no living relatives, she embraced all those she knew as her family.

Cynthia was preceded in death by her parents; maternal grandparents, Clara and Andrew Bedo; and paternal grandparents, Sofia and Stephen Magyary.

The following has been written for Cynthia as a tribute to a friend:

“For every new teacher, they enter the profession knowing they will give entirely of themselves. At some point, it is the wise teacher who comes to the understanding that in opening the doors to give, you also render a greater vulnerability to learn from those taught. It is perhaps the most fulfilled teacher who surrenders all and encourages the children to move forward without them. Such has proven to be the final lesson taught by Miss Cynthia Magyary ... left to us, her learners.

“In recent months, the efforts of her teachings have been returned to her through none other than the gift of song. Even with being in the unfamiliar position of being in the audience, she was still heard to be saying, “Keep singing; I hope.” Even then, she wanted all of those around her to hear the gift of what she was hearing. To those left conducting, she left the message, ‘I love them! Keep up the good work!’

“Cynthia has kept true to her original purpose. For in her coronation, she opened her eyes to see those who have gone on before her. There will be a standing ovation and thunderous applause; not because the concert has ended, but because for her, it has just begun.”

Heartfelt thanks go to the Rev. William H. Stone, the Rev. Dennis Bupp and the tireless angels from Celtic Hospice.

Memorial contributions may be made to Neshannock Presbyterian Church, 330 W. Neshannock Ave., New Wilmington, PA 16142; or Celtic Hospice, 150 Scharberry Lane, Mars, PA 16046.
