Brookfield

• Firefighters said a kitchen fire caused $50,000 damage Wednesday to the home of James Gravink, 7158 Fairview Drive, Yankee Lake.

The fire was called in at 10:18 p.m. after a man who was staying there woke up to the sound of crackling and smelled smoke, firefighters said.

The blaze gutted the kitchen and extended into the walls to the second floor, firefighters said. The rest of the home sustained smoke and heat damage.

A toaster or a coffee pot are believed to have started the fire, firefighters said. The home is insured.

Hartford volunteer firefighters assisted.

Hermitage

• A Sharpsville woman was injured when the car she was riding in hit a culvert and rolled over at 2:52 a.m. Thursday on Longview Road near Brian Lane, police said.

Brandi Holtz, 29, of 1720 Hall Ave., was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, police said. A message left with a hospital spokeswoman was not returned.

Ms. Holtz was in a car driven by Anthony Massotto, 29, of 98 Riddle St., Wheatland, which was eastbound when Massotto swerved to miss a deer, police said. The car went off the right side of the road and hit the culvert, police said.

• Christina L. Karsnak, 39, of 312 Elm Ave., Sharon, has been charged with theft for stealing a total of $240 from her cash drawer June 4, 16, 18, 20 and 23 from Walmart, 1275 N. Hermitage Road, where she used to work, police said.

SW Mercer County Regional

• Thomas A. Yakemovic, 21, of 49 Walnut St., West Middlesex, was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia for having the drug in a pocket and a glass pipe in the bed of a pickup at 9:54 p.m. June 23 on the basketball court of West Middlesex High School, 3591 Sharon Road, police said.
