Retired Hermitage teacher belonged to Sharon church
Norma Jean Moore McLhinney, 879 Clarksville Road, Hermitage, passed away peacefully at 5:22 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2008, in the hospital of Jameson Health System after an extended illness. She was 81.
Mrs. McLhinney was born March 18, 1927, in Washington, Pa., to Melvin and Florence Kallerman Moore.
An alumna of Trinity High School in Washington, Pa., she earned a bachelor of science degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in education, all from Westminster College, New Wilmington. Norma also did graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh and University of Colorado.
An educator for 20 years, she retired as a sixth-grade teacher for Hermitage School District. In her younger years, Norma taught at Chartiers-Houston School District in Houston, Pa.
As a 50-year member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Sharon, she belonged to the Coupler’s Sunday school class and served as a deacon.
Norma was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 27, Canonsburg, Pa., and was a life member of Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA) and National Education Association (NEA).
She enjoyed reading, gardening and traveling.
Her husband, William R. McLhinney, whom she married Nov. 23, 1949, survives in Hermitage.
Also surviving are: a son, Jeffrey W. McLhinney and his wife Deborah, Boardman, Ohio; and two grandsons, David and Derek McLhinney; and a granddaughter, Julie McLhinney.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
