Michael “Mike” W. Lewis Sr. of 1 Hemlock Drive, Hempfield Township, passed away Tuesday morning, July 22, 2008, in his residence after an extended illness. He was 66.
Mr. Lewis was born July 26, 1941, in Greenville to Grover Gail Lewis and Lillian E. Sutherland Lewis.
He was a 1959 graduate of Greenville Senior High School.
Mike most recently worked as a counselor for five years at George Junior Republic, Pine Township, and was previously employed as a welder for more than 35 years at the former Greenville Steel Car Co.
An Army veteran, he served from 1959-62 as a sharpshooter/marksman and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3374, Hempfield Township; and American Legion Post 140, Greenville.
Mike belonged to First Presbyterian Church; Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 145; and the Italian Home Club, all Greenville. He served as a past secretary for Local 1653 of United Auto Workers.
As a proud member of the Democratic party, he was a passionate follower of all political fare.
After retirement, Mike enjoyed living in the Poconos.
Surviving are: his mother, Lillian Lewis, Greenville; three daughters, Elizabeth J. Baker and her husband Stanley, Carlisle, Pa.; Christina S. Goetjen and her husband Steven, Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.; and Stephanie M. Lewis and her husband Bryan Conover, Greenville; a brother, Robert J. Lewis, Roswell, Ga.; and six grandchildren, Thomas Moss, Matthew Gilliland, Alexander Lewis; and Henry, William and Lena Goetjen.
He was preceded in death by his father; a son, Michael W. Lewis Jr.; and a brother, Donald Lewis.
