Published August 19, 2008 10:26 am - A funeral service will be held Tuesday for Virginia Schell Tiernan, 365 Collier Road, Mercer. She died at 9:10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, in her residence. She was 87.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday for Virginia Schell Tiernan, 365 Collier Road, Mercer. She died at 9:10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, in her residence. She was 87.

Mrs. Tiernan was born Dec. 25, 1920, in Pittsburgh to Frank Collier and Mary Adell Booth Schell.

She married Joseph F. Tiernan Jan. 14, 1943. He died Jan. 18, 1989.

She worked as a secretary at Massachusetts Mutual, Pittsburgh.

She was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, Mercer.

She attended Westminster College, New Wilmington, and Robert Morris University, Moon Township.

Virginia played bridge with the same card club for over 60 years. She loved her horses and dogs and also enjoyed cooking, sewing and knitting for her family. She enjoyed investing in the stock market.

She is survived by: three children, Linda, wife of Gary Hunter, Mercer; Joyce “Jo-Jo,” wife of Scott Reagan, Friendswood, Texas; and Alison “Abby,” wife of Michael Shealy, Mercer; her constant companion Kia; and 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Patricia King; and a brother.

Memorial contributions may be made to Humane Society of Mercer County, 3005 E. State St., Hermitage 16148; Loaves and Fishes, 393 Cornell Road, P.O. Box 636, Mercer 16137; or Alzheimer’s Disease, care of Saint Vincent Geriatric Health Service, 232 W. 25th St., Erie 16544.

Calling hours: 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday (8-19-08) in CUNNINGHAM FUNERAL HOME Inc., 144 S. Pitt St., Mercer.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with Dr. F. Stanley Keehlwetter, dean of the chapel at Grove City College, officiating.

Interment: Mercer Citizens Cemetery.
