Sharon Steel retiree was corporal in the Army
Raymond O. “Mac” McCallister, 88 Mitchell Road, Lot 69, Shenango Township, passed away at 3:41 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. He was 84.
Mr. McCallister was born Dec. 23, 1923, in Sharon to George and Elizabeth Leasure McCallister.
He attended Sharon schools.
He was employed in the scarfing yard of the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant for 34è years, retiring in 1985.
A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. McCallister served from Feb. 27, 1943, to Jan. 19, 1946, achieving a rank of corporal.
Mac enjoyed working outside, playing cards and bingo, painting, taking and developing pictures and spending time with his grandchildren.
His wife, the former Helen Jean Cartwright, whom he married Jan. 15, 1952, passed away Dec. 14, 1983.
Surviving are: three daughters, Linda Morgan, West Middlesex; Patricia Welsh and her husband Lawrence, Denver, Pa.; and Virginia Heckathorne Peterson and her fiancé Art Dye, Hermitage; and two sons, Raymond McCallister and his wife Pamela, Hermitage; and William Heckathorne, West Middlesex.
He also leaves seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, to whom he was affectionately known as “Pappap,” “Grandpa” and “Puppup.”
Besides his wife, Mac was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ruth Root and Phyllis Patterson; two brothers, James and George McCallister; and a grandson, Raymond Heckathorne.
