Published October 31, 2009 08:04 pm - Betsy R. Smith of 145 Hadley Road, Hempfield Township, passed away at 8:10 a.m. Saturday (10-31-09) at home after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 55.

Betsy R. Smith of 145 Hadley Road, Hempfield Township, passed away at 8:10 a.m. Saturday (10-31-09) at home after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 55.

Mrs. Smith was born July 20, 1954, in Greenville, a daughter of Rosemary (Bower) and William E. Smock.

She was a 1972 graduate of Greenville Senior High School.

Mrs. Smith was previously employed for more than 10 years by the borough of Greenville, where she worked as a secretary to the borough manager.

She was an active member of Hillside Presbyterian Church in Greenville, where she was a deacon, taught vacation Bible school, sang in the choir, served on the membership and evangelism committee and was a member of the women’s circle.

Her interests included reading, playing cards, working on puzzles and, most importantly, spending time with her family.

She married Paul E. Smith on Sept. 14, 1974. He survives at home.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Smith is survived by two daughters, Raina Tokar and her husband Brian, Greenville; and Kaylie Smith, Wexford; her mother, Rosemary Sample, Greenville; three sisters, June Gessler, Greenville; Suzette Collins, Olathe, Kan.; and Jill Collins, Pittsburgh; two stepsisters, Vicki Cihonsky and Barbara Westbrook, both Grove City; and two grandchildren, Isaac Rowe and Ella Tokar.

She was preceded in death by her father; her stepfather, James Sample; her son, Ryan Smith; her brother, William E. Smock; and her stepbrother David Lanigan.

Memorial donations can be made to Hillside Presbyterian Church, 2 N. High St., Greenville, PA 16125; or to the American Cancer Society, 320 Bilmar Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15205-4620.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Tuesday (11-3-09) in the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Aland D. Smith, pastor of Hillside Presbyterian Church, Greenville, officiating.

Interment: With committal in Shenango Valley Cemetery, Greenville.
