W. Perry McKnight

GC businessman was on board for youth ministries

---- — W. Perry McKnight, formerly of State Street, Grove City, passed away at 11:20 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2010, Grove Manor, Grove City. He was 94.

Mr. McKnight was born May 8, 1915, in Slippery Rock to Thomas Wylie McKnight and Blanche Sylvia Buchanan Shannon McKnight.

He was a graduate of Grove City High School, class of 1936.

Mr. McKnight retired in October 1975 from McKnight Brothers Transfer and Storage Co. of Grove City, a North American Van Lines Agency which Perry and his brother, Tommy, operated and had taken over from their father since it began operations in 1920.

He was a member of Wayside Community Church, Findley Township.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. McKnight served in the Navy.

He belonged to the Grove City Optimist Club and was on the board of directors of both Child Evangelism Fellowship and Youth for Christ, both Mercer County.

Perry will always be remembered by his children and grandchildren as a “True Man of God.”

His first wife, the former Ruth Pauline McKay, whom he married July 29, 1949, passed away Aug. 4, 1970. He then married Mary Sue Wheeler on April 1, 1972. She survives in Grove City.

Besides his wife, Mary Sue, surviving are: five children, the Rev. Keith McKnight and his wife Terrie, Ravenna, Ohio; Thomas R. McKnight and his wife Karen; and Jane Anne Deitrick and her husband James, all Grove City; Peggy Sue Halcomb and her husband Jim, Nicholasville, Ky.; and Nancy A. Fabian and her husband Bruce, Grove City; and 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.  

Besides his first wife, Ruth P. McKnight, Perry was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John A. McKnight; a granddaughter, Janet McKnight McIntosh; his brother, Tommy McKnight; and his sister, Hazel McKnight.

Service: Funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday (5-7-10) in Wayside Community Church, 1911 Grove City-Mercer Road, Findley Township, with the Rev. G. Kenton Shaw, pastor,  officiating, assisted by Perry’s son, the Rev. Keith McKnight.

Interment: Crestview Memorial Park Inc., Pine Township.
