Sgt. David W. Wallace III

Marine, high school athlete was loving father


Funeral service will be Thursday (2-5-2009) for Sgt. David W. Wallace III of Jacksonville, N.C., formerly of Sharpsville. He died at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, while on duty in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He was 25.

Sgt. Wallace was born Sunday, June 5, 1983, in Sharon, to David W. Wallace Jr. and Carol J. (McKenna) Wallace of Sharpsville.

He was a 2002 graduate of Sharpsville High School.

Sgt. Wallace served as a combat engineer with the Marines. He served in the Marines as a sergeant in the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, and was a veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. He also served with the Marine Expeditionary Unit.

Sgt. Wallace won the following awards during his service: Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Certificate of Commendation (individual award) and Good Conduct Medal Award.

He attended Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Hermitage.

Sgt. Wallace was involved in Sharpsville football and wrestling in school and enjoyed hunting, fishing, weightlifting, cars, doing yard work and cooking, especially spicy or Cajun-style foods.

He was the husband of Erica L. (Parker) Wallace, whom he married July 31, 2003.

Sgt. Wallace is survived by his wife; his daughter, Brookelyn Wallace; and his son, Landon Leone, all Jacksonville; his mother, Carol Wallace, Sharpsville; his in-laws, Master Gunnary Sgt. Scott and Mickey Wilson, Jacksonville; his grandparents, Jack and Ann Sandstrom, Hermitage; and his maternal grandmother, Josephine McKenna, Mount Jewett, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Lindsay (Chad) Hunter, Peoria, Ill.; his brother, Steven C. Wallace, Guam, and his fiancee Heather Macrae; a brother-in-law, Ryan Wilson, Jacksonville; and two nieces, Elianna Wallace and Alexia; and a nephew, Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his father; his paternal grandparents, David Wallace and Dora Wallace-Shank; and his maternal grandfather, Michael McKenna.

Calling hours: 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday (2-4-09) at DONALDSON-MOHNEY FUNERAL HOME, 124 Main St., Sharpsville, and the door will remain open between calling hours.

Service: Funeral service with full military honors at 10:30 a.m. Thursday (2-5-09) at Church of the Redeemer, Hermitage, with Father Dennis Blauser of Trinity Episcopal Church in New Castle, officiating. A procession will leave the funeral home at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, proceed down Main Street to 7th Street across Milliken Avenue, past the Sharpsville football stadium and continue down Oak Street.

Interment: Onslow County Cemetery, Jacksonville.
