The Rev. H. Walter White of 434 Old Sharon Road, East Lackawannock Township, passed away at 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, in UPMC Montefiore, Pittsburgh, after a three-month illness. He was 81.
Rev. White was born July 22, 1928, in Mercer to Hugh William and Mildred E. Nothstine White.
Born and raised west of Mercer at the bottom of Hell’s Hollow, he attended 10 grades in Mercer schools including the high school and graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in Hickory, Washington County.
Rev. White was a 1950 alumnus of Penn State University, from which he earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture. He subsequently graduated in 1954 from Pittsburgh Xenia Theological Seminary.
Ordained on June 30, 1954, in Cross Roads United Presbyterian Church in rural Washington, Pa., he served there from 1952-56. He then served Oakdale and Pinckneyville United Presbyterian churches from 1956-64; at West Sunbury and Pleasant Valley U.P. churches from 1964-75; Volant and Harlansburg churches from 1975-84; New Florence and West Fairfield from 1984-88; and was an interim pastor at Hillside in Greenville from 1989, until he accepted a pastorship in 1989 at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Wolf Creek Township, where he served until his retirement on June 30, 1994.
Since that time, Rev. White supplied pulpits for the Shenango Presbytery.
In 1964, he was moderator of the Southern Illinois Presbytery and from 1979-82, was stated clerk of the Shenango Presbytery.
Rev. White was a very faithful volunteer for the Salvation Army and was very active with the Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry, Mercer.
He loved gardening, reading and music.
His wife, the former Belva Cowden, whom he married June 20, 1950, survives at the residence.
Also surviving are: three daughters, Barbara and her husband Robert Rorabaugh, Burnside, Pa.; Nancy White, Mercer; and Kathleen White Cowden, Cherry Tree, Pa.; three sons, Hugh White and his wife Becky, Fort Wayne, Ind.; Mark White, Mercer; and Brian White, at the residence; a sister, Dottie and her husband, the Rev. Donald Dawson, San Antonio, Texas; a brother, Richard White and his wife Leslie, Pendleton, S.C.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Rev. White was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Martha Stevens and Louise Angliss.
