Janice Kathryn Johnson

Retired Hickory teacher belonged to organizations

---- — Janice Kathryn Johnson, formerly of 332 Boyd Drive, Hermitage, passed away at 4:58 p.m. Sunday, April 25, 2010, in St. Paul’s, West Salem Township, after an illness. She was 82 years old.

Mrs. Johnson was born Feb. 10, 1928, in Sharon to her parents, Stanley N. and Esther Elizabeth Hughes Currier, who preceded her in death.

As a 1946 alumna of Sharon High School, she continued her education at Grove City College, from which she graduated in 1950 and was a member of the Theta Alpha Pi sorority.

She then began her teaching career, first in Greenville area schools, then at West Middlesex, teaching seventh grade English.

On June 6, 1952, Janice married her husband, Charles W. Johnson, who preceded her in death in 1984.

Mrs. Johnson also worked as a G.E.D. teacher at Sharon High School, and taught for Home Bound and Wee Wisdom Kindergarten at First Presbyterian Church in Sharon.

In 1969, Mrs. Johnson achieved her master’s degree from Westminster College, New Wilmington, and was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Westminster Chapter. Mrs. Johnson continued teaching 11th grade English at Hickory High School and retired from there as a high school guidance counselor.

Mrs. Johnson was a member for many years of First United Methodist Church in Sharon and belonged to the Pennsylvania State and National Education associations, Children’s Aid Society, Meals-on-Wheels and Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Johnson loved her family very much and enjoyed watching them grow and succeed in anything they chose to do, from academics to sports.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by: two sons, Gary Johnson and his wife Cindy, Mentor, Ohio; and Dr. James Johnson, Reading, Pa.; five grandchildren, Adam Johnson, Daniel Johnson and Ann Johnson, all Mentor; and Katye Johnson and Alex Johnson, both Reading; a brother, Dr. James Currier and his wife Sue, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two nephews, Dr. James “Kip” Currier, Pittsburgh; and Todd Currier and his wife Tammy, Margate, Fla.; a former daughter-in-law, Kelley Johnson, Reading; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn W. Currier, Emlenton.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sharon High School Stanley N. Currier Scholarship Fund, 1129 E. State St., Sharon, PA 16146.
