Commissioners must answer for Woodland Place

Joseph P. Hilko

Recently The Herald reported that the Mercer County Commissioners are going to continue subsidizing Woodland Place in Mercer. All of the talk before the election was that each one was going to do something about Woodland Place and relieve some tax burden from the tax paying citizens. Apparently this was election rhetoric because nothing was apparently done; it’s business as usual.

I would like to see a full investigation to the very beginning of this fiasco to see who exactly was involved in deciding that the taxpayers have to subsidize a private business and how this deal was struck; who benefited, if there was any conflict of interest, etc. I’ve talked with the commissioners individually at different times and expressed my concern about this matter and that I felt it should be investigated and the truth be told.

Apparently the truth doesn’t matter and business must go on as usual. I’m truly very disappointed with this recent action. I know all three commissioners personally and know they are truly good and honorable and honest men and just can’t understand why nothing is being done to protect the taxpayers from this drain on the county budget. Lawrence County closed their county home because they couldn’t afford it, so did Mercer County. Why are we still paying for it?!! I urge every business owner operating in Mercer County to appeal to the Mercer County Commissioners often and regularly for subsidies for their own personal business. Apparently if it’s OK for the county to help one business, it should help all business.
